How to make a dragon name sound big

Dragon names are long, rolling and a little hissing: plenty of r, s, x and th, and endings like -ax, -ion, -yx, -anth and -ith (Golythax, Rimanthe, Nyvith). Three syllables feel like a huge beast; two feel like a young dragon or a familiar. The Length option controls this.

  • Fire dragons use stems like Pyr, Ign and Khar, with epithets of ash and gold (Malynth, the Ember-crowned).
  • Frost dragons use Kry, Rim and Skal: cold, white and silent (Rimanthe, the Ice-hearted).
  • Shadow dragons use Nyx, Umb and Mor: night and void (Umbanthe, the Last Eclipse).
  • Storm dragons use Thr, Vol and Kael: thunder and wind (Fulos, the Gale-wing).

Epithets and true names

Dragons are old, so people name them for what they did: the Ember-crowned, Bane of Summer, the Hoard-keeper. Introduce a dragon by its epithet first and reveal the true name later in your story; it builds dread. Turn on invented meanings to see what the syllables stand for in this generator’s made-up draconic (pyr = fire, rim = rime, ax = fang). They are flavor for your notes, not a real language.

Make your own dragon name

Pick a stem for the element (Pyr, Kry, Nyx, Vol), add one middle syllable for size (-ax-, -yth-, -or-) and end with a strong sound (-ion, -anth, -yx). Read it aloud in your deepest voice. If it sounds like a medicine, add a hiss; if it sounds like a sneeze, drop a syllable.
