What a wizard name needs

A wizard’s name is half name, half reputation. The first name should sound old and a little strange: three syllables, a z, x or th, and an ending like -ius, -oth or -ara (Jorimus, Vexoroth, Brinella). The title does the rest. “The Lamplit” sounds kind; “of the Sunken Crypt” does not.

  • Sage names suit scholars and mentors: Valen the Starlit, Jorir of the Hollow Moon.
  • Dark names suit necromancers, warlocks and villains: Vorova the Pale, Sevith Bonespeaker.
  • Elemental names suit storm, flame and tide casters: Zephys of the Four Winds, Brinella Tidewright.

Three kinds of wizard titles

The generator mixes three classic forms. “The + adjective” (the Patient, the Hollow) tells you who the wizard is. “Of the + place” (of the Seventh Tower) tells you where the power comes from. “Thing + -binder, -caller or -weaver” (Runebinder, Tidecaller) tells you what they do. Great villains often carry a title that sounds harmless at first.

Make your own wizard name

Start from an old-sounding stem (Al, Jor, Vex), add an ending (-ius, -oth, -ara, -ix), then give the wizard a title earned by a deed: the night they stopped the flood becomes “Tidewarden”. Skip “the Grey” and “the White”: famous wizards own those, and this generator never uses them.

Say the finished name out loud the way a nervous apprentice would announce it at the tower gate. If it sounds right whispered and shouted, keep it. If the full title is a mouthful, let other characters shorten it: a sage called Orvellius the Lanternkeeper can simply be “the Lanternkeeper” in dialogue.

Wizard Name FAQ

What is a good wizard name?

A three-syllable name with one unusual letter and a memorable title, such as Jorimus Runekeeper or Vorova the Pale.

What is the difference between wizard, sorcerer and warlock names?

In most games wizards study magic, sorcerers are born with it and warlocks make pacts. Use Sage for studious wizards, Elemental for sorcerers and Dark for warlocks or necromancers.

Are there female wizard names?

Yes. Choose Female for names like Brinella, Xanessa or Lysiessa, or Neutral for names that fit anyone.
