The sound of a fairy name

Fairy names are light. They use short syllables, lots of l, m and n, soft vowels, and endings such as -a, -ella, -ette or -wick (Miette, Serella, Pimin). They can be sweet or silly. Surnames are made from tiny things in nature: Dewbeam, Thimblenose, Clovertwirl.

• Flower fairies are garden fae named after blossoms: Belle Honeydew, Zinet Roseleaf.
• Moon fairies come out at night: Serele Glimmerveil, Myris Frostgleam.
• Forest fairies are tricksters and sprites: Bixet Twigfoot, Haznis Burrhop.

Fairy names in folklore

In old European stories, knowing a fairy’s true name gives you power over it, which is why fairies in folklore often go by nicknames. That makes a lovely hook for a game or a children’s story: the heroes earn a fairy’s real name as a reward, or lose a favor by saying it carelessly. Folklore fairies also dislike iron and love to bargain, so a fairy called Thimblenose might trade a secret for a button.

Make your own fairy name

Pick a flower, herb or tiny creature (mint, poppy, wren), shorten it (Mi, Pop, Wren) and add a soft ending (-ette, -ella, -wick). For the surname, put a small thing in front of a word for movement or light: Dew + dance, Moss + glow. The invented meanings show which plant or thing each stem stands for here.

Read the name next to a human or elf name from your story. Fairy names should feel lighter and quicker than everything around them, so if it sounds heavier than the knight beside it, drop a syllable or swap a hard ending like -ock for a soft one like -elle.
