The sound of an orc name
Orc names should sound chewed. Use short vowels (a, u, o), hard stops (g, k, d) and rough clusters (gr, kr, thr, sk). Endings like -ak, -ug, -ash and -gor slam the name shut: Grakash, Zugga, Thrakog. Female orc names often end on an open vowel or a hiss (-a, -ka, -isha, -esh): Borugha, Lugra, Yarizha.

- Shaman names are softer, with m, sh and zh: Vashul Smokewalker, Kharesh the Patient.

Clan names and epithets
Orcs in fiction often earn their second name. A clan or deed name joins something grim (Skull, Bone, Blood, Rust) with an action or a body part (splitter, maw, fang). An epithet with “the” (the Unbroken, the Patient) says something about character. Your players will remember an orc called Lugra the Patient long after they forget “orc number three”, so give recurring enemies an epithet that surprises.
Pronouncing and making orc names
Say orc names with hard, short vowels and the stress up front: GRAH-kash, ZOOG-ah. To make your own, grab a rough stem (Grak, Zug, Hrok), add -ash, -ug or -gor, and finish with a deed name. Keep it to two syllables if someone has to shout it in the middle of a fight. The invented meanings in this generator follow the stems: grak = crush, zug = fist, hrok = tusk.
