Why tavern names follow a pattern
Old inns were named for their sign. Few people could read, so innkeepers hung up a picture: a red lion, a golden goose, three crowns. That is why classic tavern names are “The + adjective + thing” or “The + number + things”. The generator uses those patterns and a few more: “The Lantern & Owl”, “The Hunter’s Lantern” and “Rowild’s Public House”.
- Cozy: the inn where the party meets, such as The Lucky Kettle.
- Rowdy: dives for smugglers and brawls, such as The Bloody Kraken or The One-Eyed Bucket.
- Upscale: where nobles drink, such as The Ivory Pegasus.
- Funny: for lighter games, such as The Wobbly Bard or The Polite Yeti.
Make the tavern memorable
Give each tavern one thing players remember: a sign missing a letter, a house drink, a cat that sleeps on the bar. Let the name hint at it. The Sticky Toad has bad floors; The Crooked Thimble is run by a retired tailor. Then name the innkeeper with the human name generator and the town with the town name generator.
Tavern, inn or alehouse?
Historically an inn offered beds, a tavern served wine and food, and an alehouse served ale. In most fantasy games they blur together, but the word you pick sets expectations: “The Gilded Swan Lodge” promises clean sheets; “The Rusty Nail Den” does not.

Tavern Name FAQ
What is a good tavern name for D&D?
Short, visual and easy to say, such as The Lucky Kettle or The Bloody Kraken. Players should be able to say “let’s go back to the Kettle”.
What is the difference between a tavern, an inn and an alehouse?
Historically an inn offered beds, a tavern served wine and food, and an alehouse served ale. In fantasy games they are often the same place.
Can I use these names for a real pub or business?
You can, but check local trademarks first, because many classic sign names are already in use.
