What makes a name sound dwarvish
Dwarf names are short, heavy and easy to shout across a forge. They use hard consonants (b, d, g, k, r) and closed syllables that end in a consonant: Bram, Kor, Dag. Many fantasy dwarves borrow the sound of Old Norse, and so does this generator, but every stem and ending here is our own. A typical name is a stem plus a solid ending: Bor + grim = Borgrim, Hjal + mund = Hjalmund.
- Mountain dwarves are the classic, proud kind: Borgrim, Hardis, Dundrin. Their clans are named for craft and war, such as Anvilcrest, Bronzehelm or Battlebeard.
- Deep dwarves growl more: Skarnrok, Khorgar, Vornoma. Their clans are named for the dark below: Gloomshaft, Blackvein, Orelode.
- Hill dwarves are rounder and friendlier, closer to farm and tavern: Belby, Pellaly, Dobbur, of clans like Kettlebottom, Barleykeg and Applebelly.
Clan names and full names
In many settings a dwarf’s clan matters more than the personal name. A clan name usually joins a material or element (Iron, Granite, Ember, Coal) with a craft or a body part (hammer, helm, beard, fist). Try introducing a dwarf clan first: “Of clan Bronzehelm, Hardis.” Female dwarves share the same clans; endings such as -hild, -dis and -run give them first names with weight (Brakhild, Gundis).
How to pronounce dwarf names
Say dwarf names as written, with the stress on the first syllable: BOR-grim, KHOR-gar. The hj in Hjalmund is said like a y (YAHL-mund), as in Norse names. Double consonants stay short and hard. If a name sounds good growled through a beard, it works.
Make your own dwarf name
Take one strong stem (Bram, Gund, Kor), add an ending (-in, -ek, -grim, -mund for male names, -hild, -dis, -ra for female names) and pair it with a clan made of two short English words. Say it with a growl. If it sounds like a sneeze, swap the ending. Turn on invented meanings to see what the syllables stand for in this generator, for example bram = boulder and grim = stern.

Dwarf Name FAQ
What are good dwarf names for D&D?
Short, punchy names with hard consonants work best at the table because players remember them. Pick a Mountain-style name and a craft-based clan, such as Borgrim Anvilcrest. The generator works for any game system, not only D&D.
Do female dwarves have different names?
In this generator, yes: female names use endings like -hild, -dis, -run and -ra. Some settings give female dwarves the same names as males; choose Neutral for names that fit anyone.
What does a dwarf clan name mean?
Usually something the clan is proud of: a craft (forge, hammer), a material (iron, granite) or a trait (beard, braid). The clan names here are built from those words, so the meaning is in the name.
Are these dwarf names from Tolkien?
No. The stems are original, and famous dwarves from books and games are filtered out.
